Two-wheelers are a lifeline for daily travel in India, but they also come with risks such as accidents, theft and even damage from natural disasters. Bike insurance online is designed to protect you from the financial strain of such events, making it an essential part of responsible riding.
Bike insurance, also called two-wheeler insurance, provides financial cover for your vehicle against:
1. Accidents
2. Fire
3. Theft
4. Natural disasters
5. Man-made disasters, and more.
It includes the legally mandated third-party liability cover, which takes care of costs if your bike causes injury, death, or damage to another person’s vehicle or property.
The Indian government mandates all two-wheeler riders to also get a personal accident cover. This cover provides financial support of up to ₹15,00,000 to the driver in case of accidents.
While third-party insurance is compulsory under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, many riders opt for comprehensive two-wheeler insurance online. These also extend protection to the insured bike, ensuring wider financial security and peace of mind on the road.
Two-wheeler insurance is an essential requirement for every rider, not only because it is mandatory but also because it helps you stay prepared for unexpected situations. Earlier, purchasing an insurance policy for a bike meant dealing with paperwork and long queues, but now, with bike insurance online, the entire process is quick and convenient.
Below are some of the main features and benefits of a two-wheeler insurance policy.
Key Features | Benefits |
Third-Party Liability Cover | Covers legal and financial responsibility if your bike causes injury or damage to a third party, as mandated by law in India. |
Own Damage Cover | Two-wheeler insurance online protects your two-wheeler against accidents, fire, theft, and natural calamities, an optional but valuable extension. |
Personal Accident Cover | Gives compensation to the owner-driver in case of accidental death or permanent disability. |
No Claim Bonus (NCB) | Rewards your claim-free riding with up to a 50% discount on your bike insurance price when renewing. |
Add-ons (Zero Dep, RSA, etc.) | Enhance your bike insurance or any comprehensive plan with add-ons like zero depreciation, roadside assistance, engine protection, and more. |
Cashless Repairs | Repair your bike at network garages with no upfront payment, stress-free and straightforward. |
Theft & Total Loss Cover | Get compensation based on the Insured Declared Value (IDV) if your bike is stolen or declared a total loss. |
IDV (Insured Declared Value) | Determines the maximum claim payout; higher IDV means higher coverage, but influences the premium. |
Claim Assistance | Enjoy proactive support and smoother claims, especially convenient when filing a two-wheeler insurance claim online. |
Instant Policy Issuance | Complete your purchase or renewal of two-wheeler insurance online within minutes and receive your policy via email. |
Many riders choose Bajaj General because it simplifies protection through two-wheeler insurance online platforms and offers fast, reliable service.
Below are some pointers that make Bajaj General stand out:

With a large customer base of over 14 crore customers, we reflect reliability in our services. You can rely on our brand as we aim to provide strong service quality and consistent performance.
Bajaj General Insurance offers quick repairs through a large nationwide network of more than 7,200 garages. It enables you to make cashless claim settlements and ensures smoother claims for any bike or scooter insurance policy holder.
We also provide fast claim resolutions with transparent tracking to our customers. This makes us one of the best bike insurance plan providers for riders across India.
You can customise your base coverage with our add-ons, such as Zero Depreciation, Consumable Expenses, 24x7 Roadside Assistance, Engine Protector, and more. At the time of two-wheeler insurance renewal, analysing these add-on requirements can also lower your premiums.
When you choose a bike insurance policy, it is not just about meeting legal requirements; it is about protecting yourself, your two-wheeler, and others on the road.
Here are the key coverages you get with two-wheeler insurance online:
Calamities like earthquakes, floods, and storms can strike without warning. Although these events are less frequent, your bike insurance online policy still provides coverage for damages caused by such natural disasters. If your bike is affected by any of these unforeseen events, you can file a claim and get compensation under your bike insurance policy.
Third-party insurance, also known as ‘Act Only’ insurance, is mandatory for anyone purchasing two-wheeler insurance. Under this policy, the insurance company covers damages caused to a third party, while the insured bike owner is protected from any legal liabilities arising from such incidents.
Any accident that occurs creates havoc and damage to people’s lives and the vehicle as well. The financial coverage accompanying a bike insurance online policy is a safety net for the policyholder. Any damage to your vehicle in an accident will not break you financially.
The insurance policy for bikes also covers the owner and will compensate in case of injuries due to bike accidents. The person can use the money, but the amount of insurance bike claims can differ under different circumstances.
The law is the primary authority and must be followed by all citizens. For driving a two-wheeler in India, having an insurance policy is mandatory. As per the Motor Vehicles Act, every vehicle owner is required to have at least third-party two-wheeler insurance coverage.
Accidents do not knock on the door. So, getting a two-wheeler insurance online can also protect you from any kind of man-made disasters like theft, robbery, riots, strikes, terrorist activity, and damage in transit by road, rail, lift, or elevator.
Two-wheeler insurance online applies to a wide range of vehicles, not just regular motorcycles and scooters. Whether you own a budget moped, a premium superbike, or even an electric scooter, an insurance policy ensures financial protection against accidents, theft, and damage.
Below is a table showing what kinds of two-wheelers are included in our insurance:
Vehicle Type | What’s Included |
Motorcycles | All engine capacities, from commuter to sports bikes. |
Scooters / Scooty | Gearless and geared scooters for daily use. |
Mopeds | Low-engine two-wheelers for short rides. |
Electric Two-Wheelers | E-bikes and e-scooters. |
Hybrid Two-Wheelers | Fuel + electric powered models. |
Luxury Bikes | Premium and superbike models. |
The Insured Declared Value represents the market value of your two-wheeler and directly influences the premium for two-wheeler insurance online. Insurers determine this value at the start of each policy period. It reflects the vehicle’s current worth, ensuring that claims are settled fairly in case of total loss or theft.
Below is a quick overview of how insurers calculate IDV:
1. IDV is fixed at the beginning of every policy period for each insured vehicle.
2. The value is based on the manufacturer’s listed selling price of the specific brand and model at the policy’s start date.
3. A structured depreciation rate is applied each year, reducing the IDV as the vehicle ages.
4. This depreciation adjustment continues for every 12-month block during the policy duration.
5. IDV also influences the coverage amount under a bike or scooter insurance policy.
By knowing how IDV is derived, you can make better decisions when purchasing two-wheeler insurance online, renewing coverage, or comparing add-ons.
The table below shows the depreciation rates for a two-wheeler as set by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI):
Age of Vehicle | % of Depreciation for Fixing IDV |
Not exceeding 6 months | 5% |
Exceeding 6 months but not exceeding 1 year | 15% |
Exceeding 1 year but not exceeding 2 years | 20% |
Exceeding 2 years but not exceeding 3 years | 30% |
Exceeding 3 years but not exceeding 4 years | 40% |
Exceeding 4 years but not exceeding 5 years | 50% |
1. The IDV arrived as per the above method may be further adjusted on the basis of various factors such as location, make and model, etc, with agreement of the Insured and as captured in the Policy Schedule.
2. The age-wise depreciation schedule shown above is applicable only for Total Loss/Constructive Total Loss (TL/CTL)/Cash Loss claims.
3. IDV of vehicles beyond 5 years of age and for obsolete models (i.e. models that manufacturers have discontinued) is to be determined on the basis of mutual agreement between the Insurer and the Insured.
4. IDV shall be treated as the Market Value throughout the Policy Period without any further depreciation for the purpose of Total Loss (TL)/Constructive Total Loss (CTL)/Cash loss claims.
1. The insured vehicle shall be treated as a CTL if the aggregate cost of retrieval and/or repair of the vehicle exceeds 75% of the IDV of the vehicle, subject to the terms and conditions of the policy.
2. The liability of the Company shall not exceed the Insured's Declared Value (IDV) of the vehicle in the event of total loss/ constructive total loss/cash loss for the year in which the loss has occurred. IDV as on the date of loss shall be computed as specified under the basis of arriving at the Insured Declared Value (IDV)
3. If your damaged motor vehicle is declared unrepairable, classified as a total loss or write-off, you may choose to keep the wreck and receive a ‘cash loss’ settlement. This amount will be the IDV minus the assessed salvage value, determined through competitive quotes obtained by the insurer, including any provided by you.
Note: For the purpose of computation of TL (Total Loss)/CTL (Constructive Total Loss) of the Insured Vehicle aggregate cost of retrieval shall mean the Company’s aggregate liability as per the terms and conditions of the policy.
Steps to calculate the bike insurance premium online, before buying or renewing a policy, are:
Step 1: Head to our two-wheeler insurance premium calculator.
Step 2: From the Menu, enter your two-wheeler make and model.
Step 3: Choose the location of the vehicle and insurance registration.
Step 4: Fill in the information pertaining to the No Claim Bonus in the previous year.
Step 5: After filling in the details, you will get the exact amount of the insurance premium.
Several factors influence the cost of two-wheeler insurance, and understanding them can help you choose the right coverage and save on premiums. Some of the factors affecting bike insurance premiums are as follows:
The type of policy you choose directly impacts the bike insurance premium. A third-party insurance for a bike is more affordable since it only covers third-party liabilities. In comparison, a comprehensive two-wheeler insurance online includes own-damage benefits, making its premium higher.
Your bike’s make, model, and variant influence the premium. A basic commuter’s bike usually has a lower premium, while hybrid and luxury bikes or superbikes attract higher costs because their repairs and replacement parts are expensive.
The IDV is your bike’s current market value and determines the maximum claim amount in case of theft or total loss. A higher IDV increases the two-wheeler insurance online premium, while a lower IDV reduces both the premium and the claim payout.
The age of your bike also matters. New two-wheelers have higher IDV and thus higher premiums. As the vehicle gets older, its market value goes down, leading to a lower two-wheeler package policy premium.
The NCB is a reward for claim-free years. With each year you don’t file a claim, you earn discounts on renewal, which can go up to 50%. This directly reduces the premium for a two-wheeler insurance online over time.
Your riding location also affects the bike insurance premium. In metro cities, accident and theft risks are higher, so the premium is higher. In smaller towns or rural areas, lower risks translate into a more affordable third-party insurance for bikes.
Buying maximum coverage bike insurance online with a minimum premium is everyone's preference. Several elements are included in the bike insurance policy. Before buying or renewing a policy, one should have complete knowledge of all the components in a two-wheeler insurance policy and how they affect you directly or indirectly, to help you choose wisely.
So, below are 4 tips that will help you choose the best bike insurance plan:
IDV helps decide the two-wheeler insurance policy premium. Before setting the premium, the insurance provider checks the market value of the vehicle with the corresponding IDV. If the former is lower than the latter, the bike insurance premium will be less.
If you choose to include deductibles in the package, the two-wheeler insurance premium will be higher. In opposition, going for a high voluntary deductible will benefit the insurer, and they will respond with a lower premium amount.
A two wheeler insurance online with effective safety device installation can get a discounted premium. This is because these devices lower the theft risk, keeping your vehicle safe.
Leaving out a small claim in the previous years can add up to a greater NCB. This can reduce the two-wheeler insurance renewal premium for the succeeding years.

Documentation records are the basis of the bike insurance online. The list of documents needed is:
1. Proof of Identity
2. Registration certificate of the bike
3. Old policy number for NCB, if you have
4. Proof of address

Riders can minimise the chances of getting rejected for their claims by following a few essential guidelines while using two-wheeler insurance online or offline services. These are as follows:
Make sure that you give the correct personal and vehicle details when you buy bike insurance online. Incorrect information can often lead to immediate rejection.
Always inform your insurer about any modifications you make to your vehicle. Undeclared accessories or engine modifications may invalidate your scooter insurance policy claims.
Avoid using the bike illegally or violating licence rules. Such breaches reduce eligibility for getting a successful claim settlement.
Maintain policy papers, RC, claim forms, and photos of damages and provide all of them while filing the claim. This helps smooth approval of your claim as well as two-wheeler insurance renewal.
The price of two-wheeler insurance online in India is determined by the bike’s engine capacity (cc) and the duration of the policy. Below are the annual and 5-year third-party insurance premiums as per IRDAI-approved rates.
Engine Capacity (in CC) | Annual Third-Party Bike Insurance Price | 5-Year Third-Party Bike Insurance Price |
Up to 75 cc | ₹538 | ₹2,901 |
75 – 150 cc | ₹714 | ₹3,851 |
150 – 350 cc | ₹1,366 | ₹7,365 |
Above 350 cc | ₹2,804 | ₹15,117 |
For electric two-wheelers, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) calculates third-party insurance premiums based on the bike’s motor power in kilowatts (kW). Below are the applicable premium rates for two-wheeler insurance online for EVs in India:
Electric Two-Wheelers (kW Capacity) | Third-party Premium Rate for 1-Year Policy | Third-party Premium Rate for Long-Term Policy (5-Year) |
Not exceeding 3 kW | ₹457 | ₹2,466 |
More than 3 kW but not exceeding 7 kW | ₹607 | ₹3,273 |
More than 7 kW but less than 16 kW | ₹1,161 | ₹6,260 |
Exceeding 16 kW | ₹2,383 | ₹12,849 |
The two-wheeler insurance online market is adding new terms and conditions with each passing year. If you want the best bike insurance policy for yourself, here are the 7 things you should know about bike insurance:
Every bike owner can claim a personal accident cover of ₹15 lakh under their two-wheeler insurance policy. It is an inbuilt feature of the two-wheeler insurance policy, not an add-on.
The add-ons offered by the two-wheeler insurance firms are the optional coverages. You have to pay extra for these, and the options are consumables cover, zero depreciation, etc.
The discounts are approved by the IRDAI for the insured who have vehicles with anti-theft devices and those who have memberships to the recognised automotive associations. The owners with good driving records can also receive discounts in terms of NCB while opting for two-wheeler insurance renewal.
The savings are approved by the IRDAI for the insured who have vehicles with anti-theft devices and those who have memberships to the recognised automotive associations. Owners with good driving records can also receive online savings on NCB.
The online system has made everything very easy. The insurers have created online two-wheeler policies for purchase and renewal on their websites. The registration process is simple and easy to understand while ensuring complete confidentiality and data security.
The no-claim bonus of your two-wheeler insurance online can be easily transferred when you purchase a new two-wheeler. This bonus is a reward for the policyholder, not the vehicle itself. It encourages safe driving and discourages filing unnecessary two-wheeler insurance claims.
It depends upon the rider’s choice to select from the types of coverage available, either a comprehensive or a liability-only two-wheeler insurance plan, which is also known as a third-party plan or policy. The 3rd party insurance plan has a lower premium as compared to the comprehensive online 2 wheeler insurance.
When your policy expires, your bike becomes legally uninsured. Riders can no longer claim benefits unless they reactivate coverage through two wheeler insurance online renewal.
Some of the outcomes of an expired bike insurance policy are as follows:
You lose protection for damages, third-party liabilities, theft, and accidents. This increases financial vulnerability despite having purchased bike insurance online earlier.
If your two-wheeler remains uninsured even after the grace period that your insurer provides you, you can lose your accumulated NCB permanently. This affects the pricing of your best bike insurance plan in future renewals.
For expired policies, insurers may want to inspect the bike before issuing a new scooter insurance policy. This increases the hassle while reinsuring your bike.
Since risk increases after expiry, premiums may rise. Using two-wheeler insurance renewal online helps minimise delays and restores coverage quickly.
When ownership of a two-wheeler changes, transferring the insurance policy becomes essential for legal and financial safety. Whether you purchased the vehicle through a two wheeler insurance online platform or offline, the transfer process remains straightforward and ensures uninterrupted protection for the new rider.
Below are the steps you will need to follow to transfer the insurance of your purchased two-wheeler:
Get in touch with your insurance company right after selling or buying the bike. Tell them you want to shift the existing cover to the buyer. This step is crucial for anyone using bike insurance online services, as it begins the official transfer.
Your insurer will share forms that need proper details from the seller and the new owner. Filling these accurately helps avoid delays and ensures the policy moves smoothly to the next rider.
Collect and provide the policy document, identity proof, address proof, registration certificate, and any additional papers the insurer asks for. These serve as evidence of a valid handover and are important whether the vehicle is protected under a scooter insurance policy or a standard bike plan.
Complete the Regional Transport Office (RTO) paperwork to officially update ownership. Submit the required RTO forms, pollution certificate, and existing policy copy. The insurer verifies this information before issuing the revised cover.
Some insurers may charge a nominal fee to shift the existing plan to the new owner. Pay this amount to finalise the transfer and maintain continuous coverage.
After verification, the insurer will release a fresh insurance document with the buyer’s name. This confirms that the new owner now holds active coverage and can proceed confidently with two-wheeler insurance renewal in the future.
Whether you are buying two-wheeler insurance online for the first time or renewing an existing policy, it is important to understand the following key terms:
IDV represents the current market value of your bike and determines the maximum claim amount you can receive in case of theft or total loss. Choosing the right IDV ensures accurate coverage in your two-wheeler insurance policy.
No Claim Bonus is a reward for claim-free years. You can get up to a 50% discount on your two-wheeler insurance renewal based on NCB, helping lower your premium for long-term policies.
This add-on allows you to claim the full repair cost without considering depreciation, providing better protection for your bike under a long-term two-wheeler package policy.
A deductible is the amount you agree to pay from your own pocket when making a claim. It can be voluntary, chosen by the policyholder, or compulsory, set by the insurer.
The premium is the amount paid to avail two wheeler insurance online coverage. It depends on factors such as the bike’s age, IDV, type of coverage, and add-ons chosen.
Many riders make decisions based on myths, which leads to gaps in coverage. Understanding facts helps buyers choose two-wheeler insurance online confidently. Below are some common myths about bike insurance:
Fact: No, third-party plans are essential for legal safety. However, you also need to protect yourself from any financial loss in case your vehicle gets damaged. You can enhance coverage when buying comprehensive bike insurance online using add-ons.
Fact: Every bike must have an active insurance policy as per law, regardless of whether it runs on petrol, diesel, CNG, or a battery.
Fact: Two-wheeler insurance renewal and purchase platforms follow strong security standards for their digital services.

Third-party insurance covers damages to others and is mandatory by law. Comprehensive insurance includes third-party cover plus protection for your own vehicle against theft, accidents, and other events.
Comprehensive bike insurance provides extensive coverage from accidents, theft, natural disasters, and third-party damages, offering broader financial protection.
No, two wheeler insurance online cannot be taken in the name of someone other than the registered owner.
No, two wheeler insurance online premiums are not eligible for tax deduction under Section 80C. However, premiums for Personal Accident cover may be considered under certain conditions.
Bike insurance online is typically valid for 1 year, but long-term two-wheeler package policy options for 2 or 3 years are also available. Third-party insurance for bikes must be active continuously for 5 years for new vehicles.
Add-ons such as zero depreciation, engine protection, roadside assistance, and consumables cover enhance basic insurance by ensuring full reimbursement for repairs without depreciation, protecting vital components, offering emergency support, and covering non-standard repair items. These extras for your two wheeler insurance online reduce out-of-pocket expenses and improve overall financial protection.
Yes, you can buy a standalone own damage (OD) for two-wheeler insurance policy, which covers damages due to accident, theft, fire, or natural disasters. However, third-party insurance for them is mandatory under Indian law and must be purchased separately if not included in a comprehensive two-wheeler insurance package policy.
Vehicle inspection is typically required when buying a new policy, during two-wheeler insurance renewal, after a claim, if the policy type changes, or if accessories are added or ownership changes.
Renewal is simple: log in to the insurer’s portal, enter your existing policy details, and review or update your coverage. You can choose to add or remove riders and check for renewal offers, including NCB benefits. Once you confirm the details and make a secure payment online, your policy is renewed instantly with continuous coverage.
You may be able to transfer your No Claims Bonus (NCB) when renewing your policy, depending on your insurer's policies. Renewal might offer new and better NCB options and discounts.
